thanksgiving day tips

With Thanksgiving on the brain, I thought I’d share some Thanksgiving day tips that have served me well over the years. I’ve hosted several Thanksgiving meals with family and friends. In the past, I would find that despite the wonderful company and amazing food, the day just kinda flew by.

I was so wrapped up in hosting and getting the feast ready, that I couldn’t truly soak in the family time and ended the day exhausted. Fortunately, I’ve learned and tested out some tried and true tips over the last few years that have made a HUGE difference for the big day making the holiday more enjoyable and less stressful. Amen to that!

As a mom of three boys, I’m always here for less stress! So let’s get into it!

Thanksgiving day tips

1. Plan Meal Within The First Week Of November

Once November 1st hits, it seems like time just fast-forward straight to Thanksgiving with the hustle and bustle of life. I found it best to start writing out what dishes I plan to have a my dinner the first week of November. This gives me time to adjust, buy ingredients, confirm the amount of guests, etc.

2. Assign Sides and Desserts

This is especially helpful if you are having a lot of guests over. Ask them what their specialty dishes are and let them bring them for the big day! Most people are happy to share a dish they love on a day of giving thanks. Plus, it takes some work off of your plate as the host!

3. Buy Groceries in Advance

In the past, I have run into the issue of buying my groceries a bit too late. Not only were some of my important ingredients already out of stock, but also the time slots for grocery pick up were full days in advance! Don’t let this be you! I like to buy mine 2 weeks in advance. Ya live and learn. As I like to say “Don’t be scared, be prepared”.

4. Organize Ingredients

I’m a very visual person. So I like to put non-perishable ingredients into their designated pans for that dish. This helps me not only triple-check to make sure I have all that I need but also helps with the execution process of prepping the meals.

5. Use Square and Rectangular Pans

I like to buy square disposable foil pans to bake my sides in for a couple of reasons. First, it helps more fit inside the oven to heat up. Also, this makes storing and cleaning up a breeze! Fewer dishes? Yes, please! It also makes things easier to store in the fridge as well since they are stackable.

6. Prep The Day Before

So this is a new must for me! With a house, hubby, and three boys to get ready on the big day for hosting, there is just not enough time in the day to do it all AND enjoy it.

So the day before I mix ingredients to casseroles, pies, anything that can be mixed and sit in the fridge overnight. That way, for the big day, all I need to do is pop them in the oven to bake and they are good to go!

7. Set Your Table The Night Before

Once the hustle of prep is done, I like to go ahead and start decorating my table for the big feast! I set the centerpiece, placemats, plates, silverware, glasses, and napkins, and for a fun festive touch, I put greeting cards on the plates for guests. It adds a special touch to the meal and leaves a memorable impression on guests!

8. Share Thanks!

Saving my personal fave for last, share thanks! Every year I make sure we put the thanks into Thanksgiving by going around the table and sharing what we are all thankful for after we say grace. This helps us to stop, reflect, and live in the moment. So often we are just going through the motions of a big day or event, that we don’t slow down and savor the moment.

I hope this post on Thanksgiving day tips helps you and your family enjoy and soak in this holiday a bit more this year! As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving Day, incorporating these tips into our plans can make the holiday more enjoyable and meaningful.

From thoughtful meal preparation and embracing gratitude to creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests, these suggestions aim to enhance the spirit of Thanksgiving.

Remember that the true essence of this day lies in the moments shared with loved ones and the appreciation for the blessings in our lives.

By embracing a mindful and grateful approach, we can make Thanksgiving a truly special and memorable occasion for all. Wishing you a joyous and fulfilling Thanksgiving celebration!
