First Let’s examine a fundamental design layout that helps achieve a relaxing ambiance to any bedroom! Our brains do not relax well with disorganization. Even on a subconscious level, a room that does not have balance and organization can disrupt and prevent a peaceful night’s sleep. This picture below lays out a simple design that’s easy to follow and is a standard bedroom design formula that helps achieve a balanced room.
Let’s break it down!
- A – Matching Mirror, Art, Or Window Treatments – Whatever your choice depends on how your bedroom is laid out. If you have windows on either side of your bed, then you would put window treatment here. If not then you can add matching art or mirrors above the lamps.
- B – Matching Lamps
- C – Matching Nightstands
- D – A Large Area Rug Partially Beneath the Bed
This standard decorative layout is interchangeable with any desired décor style. With these simple decorative elements combined, your bedroom will look effortlessly well-decorated!
Now let’s get into the nuances that seal the deal!
1. Ambient Lighting
Lighting is key to setting the mood and for a relaxing atmosphere, and a bright light beaming down on you makes winding down a tad difficult. This is especially so if you have been working under harsh and drab fluorescent lights all day. Fortunately, there are several options for adding ambient lighting to your sleep haven!
2. Mix and Match Textures
Adding certain key textures will not only improve the level of coziness in your bedroom but also add interest and contrast. Textures such as leather, velvet, wood, and faux fur, are great choices to implement in your space for added comfort and a rich, luscious feel! Mixing different textures adds visual interest, creates a more dynamic look, and gives a boost in coziness. So go ahead and play around with different textures and mix and match away!
3. Invest In An Upholstered Bed Frame
Padded or upholstered bed frames make your cozy bed even more inviting! It adds that extra oomph in the comfort department and makes any room look and feel more luxurious. I love the look of a tufted headboard. It’s a timeless look that elevates the bedroom tenfold.
4. Add Additional Upholstered Seating
If you have the space, adding additional comfy seating in your room is a great way to induce a feeling of relaxation. A common and effective way to do this is to add a bench, a loveseat, an ottoman, and chairs at the foot of your bed. For added layers of comfort, toss a cozy throw onto the bench as well as some decorative pillows. The more plush the better!
5. Use Calming Colors
Colors have a profound impact on how a space feels and can even have an impact on your mood. It’s essential to consider that while decorating your room. You want the room to exude its purpose in all aspects to achieve its full effect. Your bedroom is a retreat for relaxation, rejuvenation, and rest. So you want your bedroom to reflect that. Be careful when choosing your color scheme, specifically the wall color. Here are some examples of what to go for and what to avoid when creating a cozy sanctuary for sleep.
- Navy Blues
- Darker Hues
Colors To Avoid:
- Hot Pink
- Neon Colors
6. Create A Cozy Reading Nook
Utilizing every bit of negative space in your room is a great way to inject added coziness! And a comfy reading nook does just that. Pair your reading nook with plush seating, a pillow, your favorite throw blanket, a side table, a candle, flowers, and your favorite book! Make this space your own by adding a small bookcase if you’re an avid reader.
7. Opt For Blackout Curtains
If you’re anything like me, then sleep comes to a sad halt once the sun starts peeking into your bedroom. Once that happens, you are left tossing and turning in frustration throwing a pillow over your head out of desperation. Or at least I am. That’s why a good set of blackout curtains is a must! In addition to quality sleep, black-out curtains help with cooling and heating costs by keeping heat indoors during the winter and discharging heat during the summer. They also help protect your furniture, floors, and artwork from dreaded sun damage.
8. Fragrance Is Key
It’s unseen, however, the influence that scent has on making your room cozy and inviting is unmeasurable! NEVER underestimate the power of scent. It’s backed by science after all! Scents such as lavender and chamomile release a calming effect and promote better sleep quality. So stock up on scent boosters for a better night’s rest such as pillow sprays, fabric fresheners, essential oil diffusers, candles, wall plug-ins, sprays, etc.
9. Add Florals
Flowers always add a cozy factor to any space. Bringing the outside indoors creates a harmonious feeling and adds a touch of luxury. They can also help tie in pops of colors and accents to your space. Anytime I see a beautiful vase of flowers I instantly think of a cozy cottage. They have that organic feel about them which is why they make a great addition to any room in the house. So don’t skimp on the bedroom!
10. Layer Rugs
What’s cozier than a rug for your feet to touch first thing in the morning? Another rug on top of that rug! This is sort of another play on adding multiple textures to the mix. You can get creative with layering rugs and not only add more comfort to your bedroom but also add a more personalized, decorative touch.
Combine a smaller rug on top of the larger rug. Rugs such as faux lambskin and even cow print make for great top-layer options.
11. Pillows, Pillows, And More Pillows!
I’m a pillow fanatic! No matter how many pillows I own, I’m always on the lookout for another; or two! So naturally, I believe it’s hard to have “too many” pillows. My husband would say otherwise.
However, to help create the essence of a cozy bedroom, pillows play an essential part. The bed is the star of the show in any bedroom. It is the focal point of the eye so it’s important to not skimp on the pillows if wanting to achieve a cozy factor. What’s more snug than laying in a bed surrounded by comfy pillows? Any stage room that you see in magazines that are trying to sell bedding has ample pillows on the bed. This is to appeal to buyers by maximizing the look of comfort and making the bedding appear more stylish and full. Excess pillows help fill in the negative space on the bed so it doesn’t look as empty.
Mix different sizes, colors, patterns, and textures. Mix in metallics, faux fur, and velvet for a stylish look. Opt for 2 European size pillows, 2 standard-sized pillows for a full to Queen bed, and King pillows for a King sized bed, and then 3 decorative pillows in front of those. This will help fill up that negative space effectively and make your bed an inviting sleep haven!

12. Stock Up On Blankets
Having ample blankets in your bedroom is a must for a snug appeal! Layer them on your bed for an effortless cozy look that your see in magazines and have a throw basket near with additional soft blankets for an added comfy look as well as functionality.
Just like rugs, you can get creative with how you layer blankets as well! Experiment with combining different patterns against solids, different colors, and different textures for visual contrast as pictured above.
Here are some different blankets that are great for layering and creating a lush look!
- Chunky Knit Throws
- Plush blankets
- Cable Knit Throws
- Sherpa Blankets
- Waffle Weave Throws
- Faux Fur Blankets

13. Conceal Electronics
Whether you realize it or not, having electronics in plain view can be a disruption to your sleep. All the messy cords and thoughts of work hanging over your head don’t do much for a good night’s rest. In fact, it is recommended to not do work or even have a tv in your bedroom. But if you are like me and prefer the comfort of your bed to binge on a new series that just won’t fly! I think as long as you tuck away all those charging cords, laptops, and tablets away at the end of the day, they will be out of sight, out of mind.
14. Hang A Canopy
I’m personally a big fan of a canopy in the bedroom! I love the feeling of being enveloped in a cozy sleeping cocoon. It’s like a subconscious security blanket. Plus they look so timeless and romantic! There are so many canopy design options to choose from as well to suit your bedroom theme, size, and desired style. If your room is on the smaller side, a sheer canopy will give the same effect while visually not taking too much space like the one here.
