We all love a brand new $100,000 kitchen remodel, but alas, most of us can’t fork up that kind of cash. However, you can update your kitchen in several effective ways without breaking the bank! In this post, I will cover 8 effective ways you can update your kitchen without remodeling.
My home was built back in 2004 which doesn’t seem like it was that long ago until I started to think about it. Our kitchen reflected its age as well with its dated look. Dark cabinets and dark granite were all the rage 20 years ago, and it was time to freshen things up with a brighter, more modern look. Here are some cost-friendly ideas on how you can update your kitchen without the cost and hassle of remodeling!

1. Add Under Cabinet Lighting
Adding under-cabinet lighting is now easier than ever with the new products they have out there these days. No worries if you aren’t an electrician or can’t afford one! There are easy installation options available.
An illuminated cabinet can shed fresh light onto your newly polished counters and show off an improved backsplash. This will surely enhance the look of your kitchen as you rid your counters of unwanted dark shadows and illuminate the features of your kitchen!
2. New Light Fixtures
Never underestimate the power of lighting! It seriously can make or break a room. The first thing I did with our kitchen update was replace the main light fixture. The old one looked as if it was a part of the original build 20 years ago so it was long due! The lighting was dim as old fluorescent light bulbs and bugs collected in the light shade. YUCK!
A new light fixture in any room can add so much to your space by not only illuminating it well but even the style of it can help guide the feel of the room. Whether you want your space to be glam, modern, country, contemporary, etc., there are so many style options out there that can help you accomplish your desired look!
3. Polish Your Granite
Countertops like granite can be so expensive. So when I discovered they could be polished and look brand new, I was all in! Talk about a money-saver! A simple polish job can save thousands of dollars as it can make your counters look brand new. Freshly polished granite will reflect all those beautiful lights in your kitchen adding that sparkle we all love. The process is fairly simple! Which I’m a huge fan of.
**Tip** If you want an entirely new color AND you are brave, you can paint your countertops. There are paints and sealants specifically for this task that can even add a white marble effect.
4. Replace Kitchen Faucet/Sink
An old faucet and sink can date the look of a kitchen. Plus, older faucets don’t work as well or don’t always have handy features like the newer ones. So you will not only improve the look of your kitchen but its functionality.
When I first went to Lowes to look at some fancy new faucets, the prices were much higher than I anticipated. $200 for a new faucet? Not even including the sink? Luckily I found some options on Amazon that were a fraction of the cost with 5-star reviews!
I love this Forious Kitchen Faucet! I’ve had it for a year now and have received several compliments on it.?The price tag made it even better!
5. Install Backsplash
A real eye-catcher is a good backsplash. It’s the cherry on top of any fresh new kitchen look! It can be a little overwhelming trying to pick out just the right one with all the options that are out there. You can buy samples or look on sites like Pinterest for inspiration to help with your decision.
Focus on the look and feel that you are going for and search those options to see what style people typically use to accomplish that. This will give you a better idea of what you are looking for as well as direction.
A safe and timeless backsplash option is subway tile. It’s a look that doesn’t seem to age and you can always get a fresh take on the style with different patterns such as chevron that can add a new take on a classic look.
**Tip**If you don’t have the tools needed for such a project, there are some peel-and-stick backsplash options that you can use. However, if you have flat wall paint, it will not adhere to the wall.
6. Replace Kitchen Hardware
At first, I was a little skeptical of how much influence new hardware had on the overall look of a kitchen. But, the right hardware can elevate a cabinet and add a polished look. I’m not big on following trends, but if I see something I like, I go for it. A big trend right now is golden T-bar handles. These will add a luxurious look to any white or even matt black cabinets.
7. Paint Cabinets
Painting your cabinets is the most dramatic of changes that you can make to the overall look of your kitchen. However, it is a big task so you gotta be up for it! When I started this project, I was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
I thought it was going to be so easy and I could knock it out in a couple of days. Boy was I in for an awakening! Of course, that’s how I always go into any project. I get these ideas in my head and I’m so optimistic. My hubby just laughs. However, I’m really glad I did it!
Anyway, just be aware that it is quite a project and if you’re down, it will be well worth it! First, figure out what kind of look you are going for and what color schemes will accomplish that. Then, think about the type of finish you want on your cabinets. The most practical is high gloss as it’s so much easier to clean. With 3 kids and a hubby, that’s what I went for!
For added ease in this project, I invested in a one-coat paint. It costs a bit extra but it saves labor and time. A really popular paint brand is Benjamin Moore. They have such great color selections and quality coverage. I was really happy with the outcome!
8. Add Crown Molding
When you want to enhance the look of a room, see where crown molding can be added. It’s a simple but effective detail that adds value and luxury. Adding crown molding to the top of your cabinets is a bit of work, but it can elevate the look of any basic-grade cabinetry!
When upgrading your kitchen, it’s all in the details. You do not want to skimp on the deets as they truly make all the difference. Looking at the picture above captures a lot of the upgrades I have previously discussed. You can see how the crown molding, glossy counters, backsplash, cabinet lights, and fresh lighting all work in unison to create a more expensive look!
Try to imagine this kitchen without those improvements and notice how lackluster the space becomes. Each improvement big or small adds value to your home. Plus, a fresh change is good!
